Mise-en-Scène FAQ
If I get accepted in a Creative Team, can I pay for another person's training for a given workshop, and then claim that expense out of the $5000 credit as a production expense later?
Creative Teams receive the $5000 credit upon being greenlit for production. If they are greenlit, yes, they can claim this expense. Facilitating another's training in this program is a legitimate production expense.
Can I claim the expenses of story-boarding, even though they will occur before I get the $5000 credit?
If Creative Teams are greenlit for production, yes, story-boarding is a legitimate production expense.
Can a Potential Creative Team submit more than one script in their application?
Yes, as long as the execution of either script would result in the same people doing the same roles.
Can a person be included in more than one Creative Team application?
Yes, although, if one team was successful, it would by default mean that the other would not. This could result in unpredictable outcomes in jury decision-making. A person cannot participate in two successful teams.
Can a Creative Team member work as crew on another team's project?
Yes.
If a successful Creative Team defaulted in the program, and another team which was subsequently taking the training, could activate their schedules and projects, could they take their place?
Maybe. It would depend on a number of factors: how far along the program was, what the status of runner up short-listed teams was, how that team was assessed by the jury, and other factors.
The Creative Teams are required to take Set Orientation and Set Safety. If I have already taken these in the past, do I have to take them again?
The Yukon Film & Sound Commission notified us that these courses were revamped about three years ago. If you have taken the new ones, no you don't have to repeat them.
What will the likely time commitments be for Phase 1?
The aim is to try to bring two professional trainers from the South for each of producing, writing, and directing. It could conceivably be 2 x 2 days for each role. If your Team has only two people, one person will have a greater commitment. Team members outside of the official role can still attend.
Will the workshops be back to back or spread out?
Efforts are being made to condense the times together.
Is there a double discount for workshops if you are a member of both YFS & NFVIA?
No, one discount applies.
Has there been interest from filmmakers outside of Whitehorse?
Yes, we have fielded emails and questions from Yukoners outside of Whitehorse.
Can a Creative Team include someone who is not a Yukoner?
No.
Will the Creative Teams have to buy insurance?
No. The Project will insure the production, the equipment, and people from third party liability and workplace injury.
Will the insurance include Error & Omissions insurance for the productions?
No.
What will happen to the films afterwards?
Participants agree to allow non-exclusive limited use of the films for promotional purposes by the Project partners. The Creative Teams own the films.
Do I have to use a certain computer program to write my script?
No, you just have to follow a certain formatting as described in the Info Pack. There are script-writing programs out there, but since your short will probably only be about 10 pages, any word-processor will do.
Can Selected 2-person or 3-person teams reconfigure their membership, or roles, after-the-fact, once the program has begun?
Requests of this nature must be submitted for consideration. Consideration will only be given in extreme circumstances. The Project may suggest other solutions before permitting reconfiguration. Entry applications are made in good faith and the Project relies upon the merit of assessing those applications. The Project may or may not permit reconfiguration.
Could you be on a crew if you are not on a team?
Yes. Crews will be comprised of people who take the workshops. This creates the eligibility list. Teams select their own crew. Crew can market/apply to teams.
Is the writer on the set during shooting?
That is up to each Creative Team.
Can the short be a part of a larger project?
The short can be a part of a larger project, but it must stand on its own also. It must be live-action drama.
If a team drops out, do their resources get divided among the remaining teams?
Possibly but not probably.
Can I hire a make-up person even if they haven't taken the training?
Teams can recruit crew from the greater community if there is no one left from the eligibility lists for the department required. Other than Talent and the Keys, the crew must be volunteers.
Are the actors paid?
Creative Teams are responsible for all talent costs. The Project recommends that actors are paid.
What is the nature of the community travel subsidy?
Creative Teams or Team members are encouraged to apply no matter where they live in the Yukon. Location will not be a factor in deciding the viability of an application/Creative Team. If the Jury decides to award a place in the program to Teams where members live outside of Whitehorse, the Jury has the option to offer a travel subsidy amount to assist with travel costs. The amount of the subsidy will depend on the number of Teams/people in need. The subsidy will operate like a credit, where recipients provide travel receipts to the MES Project Manager for reimbursement. Valid travel expenses typically include fuel, oil, car rental, Whitehorse taxi, flights, and accommodation. Recipients and the Project Manager will agree in advance on what, in the recipient?s case, constitutes a valid travel expense. Decisions about how to apply the subsidy, within these terms, will be up to the recipient. Unspent amounts in the credit will revert to the Program. Recipients will be able to make their subsidy go further by car-pooling, billeting, and otherwise sharing travel expenses. MES recognizes that the program could require a number of trips to Whitehorse. Some are mandatory for participants but others might not be, depending on how the Team chooses to administer itself.
What is the actual time commitment to the Program?
The time commitment depends on the nature of a Team's decided participation. It depends on whether Teams are trios or duos and how they choose to organize and administer themselves.
The program requires:
- All Writers in Writing Workshops
- 4 days in Sept. - All Directors in Directing Workshops
- 4 days in Sept., choosing the palette
- 2 days in Dec., directing for the edit
- 3 days in Jan., directing actors - All Producers in Producing Workshops
- 4 days in Sept - Everyone must take Set Safety and Set Orientation:
- 2.5 days in Sept or 2.5 days later on (offered by NFVIA)
The Producer and Director must also take
- Assistant Directing (2 days)
- Location Sound Recording (2 days)
- Script Supervision/Continuity (2 days)
- HD Camera & Lighting (3-4 days)
The Creative Teams will be developing their script and paperwork on their own time, optionally with a mentor.
The Producer and Director must attend the shoot (3 days, Jan/Feb).
Creative Teams might optionally work on other shoots.
The Director must attend the edit (4 days picture edit, break, 2 days picture edit, 2 days sound edit/mix in March).
Creative Team members can participate in any of the above workshops or production stages outside of their role as suits the Team.
Can I sign up for an individual course right now?
Yes. Send your name, email, phone number, and the course you want to take to . Creative Teams will have priority. The maximum class size may vary per course but additional participant lists are being maintained. Indicate if you are a member of either YFS or NFVIA.
